thing i tell myself #371:
you know how cartoons take forever to make, but no time to watch, so it hardly even seems worth it? well since these are on the internet, they take forever to load, so it all evens out, right? that's what i tell myself when i go to sleep, anyway. one thing on a long, long list of things.

Y Did Yoda Figt Count Duku? (5min)
As it turns out, my 5-year-old cousin is a comic genius. Using his drawings and his voices, I helped him make his own Star Wars movie. We just forgot the part about Star Wars.

Tony Cartoons
My friend Tony is kind of a jerk. As part of his plan for me to make him famous, he forced me to make these Flash cartoons about the two of us. Since his majesty's ego dictates it, this is an ongoing series.

Tony Cartoons are also featured on Salon.com.

01: Haiku War
02: Zen and the Art of Angle Grinding
03: Sizzling Hot Bacon
04: Let's Go to the Mall

That Special Monkey (5min)
Steve is searching for love--a true love, a lasting love--the kind of love that can only be shared between a dragon and a monkey. In this whimsical, beat-driven animation, Steve's friend helps him through his bizarre journey to find that special monkey. Student academy award winner.

Dreamscapes (6min)
For the making of Dreamscapes, I interviewed 20 people for their dreams, edited them together, and animated each one in a different style. It's almost entirely done with digital painting.

Piper
Piper Possum replaced "Face" on Nick Jr. so he could trick a bunch of kids into thinking he was really strong when he really wasn't! 10-sec After Effects cut-out animation.

Squirrels (15sec)
The N commissioned a handful of twisted holiday spots from Bunko Studios, and I animated this one in After Effects.

Working Wonders (2min)
Tide did a pretty cool thing and sponsored a great-looking short to advertise its clothing drive in 2005. Out of the four parts, I got to co-animate this act with the great animator, Tom Boné, at Flickerlab.

Moose and Zee (2min)
Moose is the spokes-character for Noggin, and I got to animate him at Bunko Studios. Part of the fun was figuring out how to create rigs for his hands and legs with After Effects expressions. This "next-on" short is great for anyone who needs practice with the color yellow, which--let's face it--is most of us. Okay, fine, it's just me.

The Avenue (20sec)
Breakdancing. This is a 20-second spot that was created for hip-hop show The Avenue.

Healthcare Web Site Intro (1.5 min)
This company provides health care information to a wide variety of clients. In writing it, I had the challenge of addressing each of these groups equally and showcasing the company's new branding.

Ottawa Signal Film (1min)
My friend Will Krause directed the opener film for the Ottawa Animation Festival 2005. Since the audience has to watch this thing a bazillion times throughout the festival, he came up with the idea to split the frame into nine squares with nine overlapping storylines, so people have a different crazy square to watch each time.

Christmas Card 2003 (3min)
Since when are there earthquakes at the North Pole?

Humprey the Wombat (1min)
Humphrey teaches us a valuable lesson about nitroglycerin, and why you shouldn't drink it. Pretend, as a favor to me, that you don't know what a wombat looks like, and keep your mind open to the possibility that perhaps they look like bears. I was just learning SoftImage when I made this.

Liam's Story (2min)
This is a true story, about Liam, and how he saw a cat that got run over, and the tire went right over its skull, and the eye popped out. Also, told by Liam.

Minimum Wage (1min)
An amateur music video for the They Might Be Giants song, Minimum Wage. If only working at a fast food chain were really like this. Actually, it kind of is, except the french fries don't dance. And if you ever see one that does--run.

MPG 8.0 MB

Simon (1min)
An uncolored short about a clever dog who has probably never heard of Rube Goldberg, but could have taught him a trick or two.

MPG 6.7 MB

Adventures of Sloth (2min)
A cute little critter who's always getting himself into trouble.

MPG 7.75 MB

Adventures in Mayonnaise (3min)
An exciting 3-part series of the endless adventures there are to be had in a large vat of mayonnaise.

What Happens to You When You Get Too Happy (1min)
Heed my advice, my friends, and learn from this cautionary tale. Know what happens when you get too happy.

watch >

Two Guys Fighting (2min)
The classic flipbook battle between one guy with a sword and another guy with a sword. Who will win? One of them, probably!

watch >

What Happens (1min)
What Happens to you, in life. An exciting first-semester animation metamorphosis assignment. (Ever notice, how whenever I say 'exciting,' it usually means 'really boring?')

watch >

Socko Flipbook Theater (1min)
Uh, nothing really happens in this, but it's over pretty quick, so I guess it's up to you.
